Sustainability
We are committed to practices that meet the needs of the present, without compromising future generations. We believe that sustainability is not just about looking after our natural environment, but also considering the social and economic impact of what we do and how we do it. In particular we aim to provide a tourism experience that focuses on protecting the environment and allows our visitors to travel responsively with little impact on our surroundings.
Sustainability Practices
Water Conservation
- sole use of rainwater throughout accommodation
- dual flush toilet with low volume water use
- hardy drought resistant plants are used in the garden
- water wise garden
- front load washing machine used with low water use rating
- air and sun dried laundry, not electric dryers
Energy Consumption
- We have installed solar power which is fed back to the grid
- We encourage our guests to conserve energy by switching off lights & air conditioners when leaving the room
- Linen is line dried
- On demand gas hot water is supplied in the accommodation ensuring water is only heated on demand
- Verandah's and carports are used to shade building reducing the need for air conditioning
Waste Management
- food scraps recycled and fed to our chooks, and in return we get fresh free range eggs
- bottles, cans, paper and plastic is recycled
Sustainable Tourism Practices
- Guests food supplies are sourced from local suppliers where possible
- Hens are kept and their eggs are available for guests
- Fruit trees are planted at the property and fresh fruit is available to guests
- 100 year old fig trees are located on the property and figs are available to guests
- Native Wild peach (Quandong) trees are dotted around the property and these are pointed out to guests and used in cooking
- local businesses are always used as first preferences for business needs and services
- Our commitment to better care for our environment is very important to us. Ground wood and fallen timber provides homes and shelter to many small creatures and insects that form an important link in the ecosystem. In an attempt to keep this important balance of nature, the collection of fire-wood by guests is prohibited. We purchase fire-wood in a renewable and sustainable way and provide to guests for sale.
NO FIREARMS, CHAINSAWS OR MOTORBIKES ALLOWED.
- The Flinders Ranges has a unique cultural heritage which is potentially placed at risk by the success that tourism brings. We are active in local community groups and government bodies such as Greening Australia in the hope that we can be aware of potential threats to our fragile ecology, and be in a position to manage and protect as necessary.
- We participate in many community activities, including cleaning rubbish from roadsides
- We are involved with Greening Australia for land conservation
- Boxthorn eradication commitment
- Horehound control commitment
- We are also custodians of some rare and threatened species of Grey Box tree located on the slopes of Mt Brown
- We are also committed to the control of feral goats in the Flinders Ranges and in particular on Mount Brown
